Frequentist versus Bayesian analyses: Cross-correlation as an approximate sufficient statistic for LIGO-Virgo stochastic background searches

چکیده

Sufficient statistics are combinations of data in terms which the likelihood function can be rewritten without loss information. Depending on volume reduction, use sufficient as a preliminary step Bayesian analysis lead to significant increases efficiency when sampling from posterior distributions model parameters. Here we show that frequency integrand cross-correlation statistic and its variance approximate for ground-based searches stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds. The because one works weak-signal approximation uses measured estimates autocorrelated power each detector. We perform analytic numerical calculations that, this approximation, LIGO-Virgo's hybrid frequentist-Bayesian parameter estimation is equivalent fully analysis. This work closes gap LIGO-Virgo literature suggests directions additional searches.

Prospects for Stochastic Background Searches Using Virgo and LSC Interferometers

We consider the question of cross-correlation measurements using Virgo and the LSC Interferometers (LIGO Livingston, LIGO Hanford, and GEO600) to search for a stochastic gravitational-wave background. We find that inclusion of Virgo into the network will substantially improve the sensitivity to correlations above 200Hz if all detectors are operating at their design sensitivity. This is illustra...

Used percentage veto for LIGO and virgo binary inspiral searches

A challenge for ground-based gravitational wave detectors such as LIGO and Virgo is to understand the origin of non-astrophysical transients that contribute to the background noise, obscuring real astrophysically produced signals. To help this effort, there are a number of environmental and instrumental sensors around the site, recording data in “channels”. We developed a method called the used...

LIGO / VIRGO searches for gravitational radiation in hypernovae

A torus around a stellar mass Kerr black hole can emit about 10% of the spin-energy of the black hole in gravitational radiation, potentially associated with a gamma-ray burst. Wide tori may develop buckling modes by the Papaloizou-Pringle instability and gravitational radiation-reaction forces in the Burke-Thorne approximation. Gravitational wave experiments may discover these emissions in a f...

Bayesian Versus Frequentist Inference

1 Goals and Outline Throughout this book, the topic of order-restricted inference is dealt with almost exclusively from a Bayesian perspective. Some readers may wonder why the other main school for statistical inference – frequentist inference – has received so little attention here. Isn't it true that in the field of psychology, almost all inference is frequentist inference? The first goal of ...

Improved upper limits on the stochastic gravitational-wave background from 2009-2010 LIGO and Virgo data.

Gravitational waves from a variety of sources are predicted to superpose to create a stochastic background. This background is expected to contain unique information from throughout the history of the Universe that is unavailable through standard electromagnetic observations, making its study of fundamental importance to understanding the evolution of the Universe. We carry out a search for the...
